James M. McPherson

Professor James McPherson is the George Henry Davis '86 Professor of History Ameritus at Princeton University. He is also a member of the editorial board of Encyclopaedia Britannica. He won the Pulitzer Prize for "Battle Cry of Freedom" and his most recent book "Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as Commander in Chief" (Penguin Press 2009) has received wide critical acclaim.

McPherson was recently awarded the Pritzker Military Library Literature Award for lifetime achievement in military history in 2007 - the first person to be awarded the prize. McPherson also served as president of the American Historical Association in 2003.

McPherson received his Bachelor of Arts at Gustavus Adolphus College in 1958 and his Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University in 1963.

Unlike many other historians, McPherson has a reputation for trying to make history accessible to the general public. Many consider his Pulitzer Prize-winning book "Battle Cry of Freedom" partly responsible for a recent resurgence of interest in Civil War history. McPherson stands as one of the most recognized and esteemed Civil War historians.
